Pregnancy Week 15: Baby’s Growth, Exercise and Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

Welcome to week 15 of pregnancy! By now, you’re well into the second trimester, and your baby is continuing to grow rapidly. This stage brings fascinating developmental changes while your own body begins adapting more noticeably to pregnancy.

What’s Happening With Your Baby?

At around 15 weeks, your baby may measure approximately four inches long and weigh around two ounces, although measurements naturally vary between pregnancies.

Your baby’s skin is still very thin, allowing blood vessels to be visible beneath it. A fine covering of hair called lanugo is also developing. This soft hair is a temporary part of fetal development and will generally disappear later in pregnancy.

Hair growth is also beginning on your baby’s scalp and eyebrows. Meanwhile, your baby is becoming increasingly active, moving and rolling inside the uterus. You may not feel these movements yet, but as pregnancy progresses, those tiny movements will become easier to recognize.

Changes in Your Body

Your uterus continues expanding as your baby grows. During prenatal appointments, your healthcare provider may monitor your uterus and, later in pregnancy, measure fundal height as one way of tracking growth.

Weight gain during pregnancy varies significantly from person to person. Factors such as your pre-pregnancy weight, overall health and whether you are carrying one baby or multiples can influence recommended weight gain. Rather than comparing yourself with someone else’s pregnancy, discuss your individual goals with your doctor or midwife.

You may also find that your nutritional needs are changing. Pregnancy generally requires additional nutrients and, depending on the stage of pregnancy and individual circumstances, additional energy. Your healthcare professional can provide personalized guidance rather than relying on a single calorie target.

Staying Active During Pregnancy

For many people with uncomplicated pregnancies, regular moderate physical activity can be beneficial. Walking, swimming and pregnancy-appropriate yoga are examples of activities that may be comfortable options.

Exercise can support general fitness, mood and energy levels, but pregnancy exercise recommendations should be individualized. There is not enough evidence to promise that a particular exercise routine will increase a baby’s intelligence, so claims of specific IQ improvements should be treated cautiously.

If you have pregnancy complications or have been advised to restrict physical activity, follow your healthcare professional’s recommendations.

What About Red Raspberry Leaf Tea?

Red raspberry leaf tea is often discussed in natural-pregnancy circles as a traditional herbal preparation. Some research has examined whether it might influence labor, but evidence regarding its effectiveness and safety during pregnancy remains limited.

It should not be considered a guaranteed way to shorten labor. If you’re considering drinking it during pregnancy, talk with your doctor or midwife first, particularly because herbal products can have effects that vary between individuals.

Week 15 Checklist

This week, focus on nutritious meals containing a variety of foods, including fruits and vegetables. Staying hydrated and maintaining appropriate physical activity can also support overall well-being when medically suitable.

Most importantly, keep attending your prenatal appointments and ask questions about nutrition, exercise, supplements and upcoming screening.

Every pregnancy follows its own timeline. By week 15, your baby is becoming more active, your body is continuing to adapt, and you’re moving deeper into an important stage of pregnancy.
