Welcome to 24 weeks pregnant—you’re getting closer to the final trimester! At this stage, your baby is growing rapidly, becoming stronger, and preparing for the incredible journey ahead. Meanwhile, your body is continuing to adapt to support your growing baby.
Baby at 24 Weeks
At around 24 weeks, your baby may weigh approximately 1.3 pounds (600 grams) and measure around 12 inches (30 cm) from head to toe, although individual growth can vary.
From this point onward, your baby will focus heavily on gaining weight. While earlier pregnancy involved rapid development and growth in length, the coming weeks bring significant increases in body fat and overall weight.
Your baby’s body is also developing specialized brown fat. Unlike ordinary body fat, brown fat helps generate heat and plays an important role in temperature regulation. Newborns have limited ability to regulate their body temperature, so this developing tissue is one of several adaptations that help prepare them for life outside the womb.
Your baby’s movements may also become increasingly noticeable. As the uterus becomes more crowded, you may start recognizing patterns in your baby’s activity, although movement can naturally vary from day to day.
Where Does Pregnancy Weight Go?
By the middle of pregnancy, weight gain can become much more noticeable. Importantly, pregnancy weight isn’t simply “extra weight.” Your body is making room and building resources to support pregnancy and prepare for birth and breastfeeding.
Some of the increase comes from your growing baby, while other portions are associated with the placenta, amniotic fluid, uterus, breasts, and increased blood volume.
This is why focusing on overall nutrition rather than obsessing over calories or the number on the scale can be helpful. Every pregnancy is different, and recommended weight gain depends on factors such as your pre-pregnancy body mass index and individual health circumstances. Your maternity care provider can help you understand what is appropriate for you.
Consider a Birth Doula
As you move closer to the third trimester, you may also want to learn more about birth doulas. A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during labor and birth.
A doula does not replace your doctor, midwife, or other medical professionals. Instead, they can work alongside your maternity care team and your birth partner, helping you feel supported and informed throughout labor.
If you’re considering hiring one, this is a good time to research local options, ask about experience and training, and find someone whose approach fits your preferences.
Your Week 24 To-Do List
This can also be a useful time to prepare your home for the months ahead. Consider finishing major decorating or household projects while you still have comfortable energy.
You might also plan a relaxing date, short getaway, or staycation with your partner. Pregnancy can be busy, so making intentional time to rest and connect can be valuable.
Most importantly, remember that every pregnancy develops at its own pace. Keep your regular prenatal appointments, discuss questions or concerns with your healthcare professional, and give yourself plenty of grace as your body continues this remarkable work.
Week 24 reminder: Your body is changing because it is supporting new life. Focus on nourishment, rest, preparation, and taking things one week at a time.
