Welcome to week 34 of pregnancy! You’re getting closer to meeting your baby, and there’s plenty happening both inside the womb and in your everyday life. Your baby is continuing to mature, while you may be dealing with restless nights, vivid dreams, and the growing excitement of preparing for birth.
Baby at 34 Weeks
At 34 weeks, your baby is around 19 inches long and approaching 5 pounds, although babies naturally vary in size. Her body is continuing to add fat, which helps with temperature regulation after birth, and her lungs are getting closer to maturity.
One fascinating part of late pregnancy is the development of your baby’s immune protection. During pregnancy, certain antibodies from you can cross the placenta and provide your baby with passive immunity. This protection helps your newborn during the early period of life while their own immune system continues developing.
After birth, breastfeeding can provide another source of immune-supporting components. Colostrum, the first milk produced after delivery, contains antibodies and other substances that support your baby’s developing immune system.
Why Is Pregnancy Sleep So Difficult?
By week 34, getting a good night’s sleep can feel like a challenge.
Your growing belly can make finding a comfortable position difficult. Frequent trips to the bathroom, heartburn, physical discomfort, and pregnancy-related thoughts can all interrupt your sleep.
You may also experience unusually vivid or memorable dreams. Pregnancy brings major physical and emotional changes, so it’s understandable that your mind may feel particularly active at night.
Instead of worrying about every strange dream, try creating a relaxing bedtime routine. Keep the bedroom comfortable and dark, reduce stimulating activities before bed, and try gentle breathing or relaxation exercises.
If anxiety or persistent sleep problems are making everyday life difficult, mention them to your healthcare provider.
What Should You Pack for Birth?
With your due date getting closer, this is a great time to start preparing your hospital or birth-center bag.
You don’t need to pack your entire house. Start with the essentials:
- Comfortable clothes and underwear
- Toiletries and personal-care items
- Phone charger
- Important identification and medical documents
- Comfortable footwear
- Nursing-friendly clothing or a comfortable robe
- Baby’s going-home outfit
- Extra clothes for your partner or support person
- Any medications or personal items recommended by your healthcare team
If you’re planning a home birth, organize the supplies recommended by your midwife and make sure everything is easy to find.
Rather than waiting until labor begins, having your essentials organized ahead of time can give you one less thing to worry about.
Your Week 34 To-Do List
One particularly important task is installing your baby’s car seat. Check the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and, if available, use a certified child passenger safety technician to check the installation.
This is also a good time to make sure your breast pump and feeding supplies are ready if you plan to breastfeed or pump. Check with your insurance provider or healthcare system to find out what equipment may be covered where you live.
Most importantly, don’t feel pressured to have everything perfect. Preparing gradually can make the final weeks feel much more manageable.
A Positive Reminder
“My baby is healthy and well.”
The final weeks of pregnancy can bring excitement, anticipation, and plenty of questions. Take things one day at a time, stay connected with your healthcare team, and give yourself permission to rest.
You’re getting closer to the moment when you’ll finally meet the little person you’ve been preparing for all these months.
